General Bikram Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, ADC is an alumnus of Punjab Public School, Nabha. He was commissioned into The Sikh Light Infantry in March 1972. During his military career spanning over forty years, the General has held various high profile Command and Staff appointments. He has commanded an Infantry Battalion in the North East and on the Line of Control in J&K, a RR Sector and an Infantry Division in Northern Command. He has commanded 15 Corps and Eastern Command. He has served in three UN Peace Keeping Missions. The General has also held important staff appointments at Army Headquarters, which include tenures in Military Operations, Perspective Planning and Staff Duties. Besides holding two Masters Degrees from India, he also holds a Masters Degree in Strategic Defence Studies from the USA. The General is an avid sportsman. Cricket, Athletics and Hockey are his favourite games.

Meet N Ramachandran - Indian Olympic Association's new president and BCCI chief N Srinivasan's brother

With the Sochi Winter Olympics on right now and the Indian trio of Shiva Keshavan, Himanshu Thakur and Nadeem Iqbal being unable to unfurl the country's flag thanks to a ban due to corrupt officials, good news comes as a new Indian Olympic Association or IOA president has been elected.

On Sunday, World Squash Federation (WSF) president N Ramachandran won the electionsunopposed. The polls may pave the way for India's return to the Olympic fold since suspension by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in December 2012. The IOA elected a number of tainted officials to key posts and so faced suspension from the elite body.

Abhay Singh Chautala and Lalit Bhanot were barred from contesting on the ground that they have been charge-framed by a court of law.

N Ramachandran is a former Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI) secretary general. He is also the brother of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) supremo N Srinivasan. Ramachandran was elected treasurer of the Indian body in 2012 before the IOA was suspended.

Since these elections have taken place after February 7 when the Sochi Olympics opening ceremony happened, the Indian athletes are competing as independents. 

Kho Kho Federation of India president Rajeev Mehta and All India Tennis Association chief Anil Khanna were elected secretary general and treasurer respectively. The duo also won unopposed. 

Sports fans will be hoping to see the Indian flag flying high at the Rio Games in 2016 after we missed the chance at Sochi.

Satya Nadella is new Microsoft CEO

Ending months of speculation, U.S. software giant Microsoft on Tuesday announced that it had appointed Satya Nadella as the company’s chief executive officer, effective immediately. File photo

“During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella,” said Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

Hyderabad native Satya Nadella (46) is the new CEO of Internet giant Microsoft, the company announced on Tuesday.

“During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella,” said Bill Gates, Microsoft’s founder and Chairman of the Board, adding, “Satya is a proven leader with hard-core engineering skills, business vision and the ability to bring people together.”

After a selection period that saw numerous outside candidates drop off, the Microsoft Board signalled its intention to focus on innovation by selecting the man credited with developing the company's cloud computing and Bing search engine businesses.

In his email to Microsoft employees on his first day as CEO Mr. Nadella said, “Today is a very humbling day for me. It reminds me of my very first day at Microsoft, 22 years ago… I saw then how clearly we empower people to do magical things with our creations and ultimately make the world a better place.”

While some have argued that Microsoft was slow to respond to the shift towards cloud computing, conceding a lead to others such as Google and Amazon, Mr. Nadella underscored his intention to reverse this saying, “Our industry does not respect tradition – it only respects innovation.”

Mr. Nadella who holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Manipal University, a master’s in computer science from the University of Wisconsin, and an MBA from the University of Chicago, joined Microsoft in 1992.

His long career as a Microsoft insider saw him promoted to numerous high-level positions before he was appointed Executive Vice President (VP) for the cloud and enterprise group in 2012.

He is married and has three children.
