Android 5.0 Lollipop Release: 6 Tips for Nexus Users
Earlier this month, Google started rolling out Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop updates to its Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10 variants around the world. Many Nexus users got the update within the first week though there are still some people that are still without their upgrade. With those people in mind, we offer some advice to Nexus users still waiting for Google’s Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA.
Last month, Google finally announced several new products including a Nexus 6 smartphone from Motorola, a Nexus 9 tablet from HTC, and an Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and Nexus 5. Google did not outline a specific release date for the Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop roll outs, leaving those announcements for a different date.
That date arrived earlier this month when the company began pushing out Android 5.0 Lollipop updatesto the Nexus 5, Nexus 7 Wi-Fi only, and the Nexus 10. A little later on, the company delivered the Nexus 4 Android 5.0 Lollipop update to owners of the aging former flagship. And while many Nexus users got the opportunity to pull down the OTA from Google in the early stages, there are still some users that are waiting for the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to arrive.
Google’s Android update roll outs are notoriously slow. Usually, they take about a week to deploy though as we’re finding out, the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is rolling out much slower than that. Some Nexus 5, Nexus 7, and Nexus 4 users are still waiting for their chance to move from Android 4.4 KitKat to the new operating system. Devices in our possession are still without the OTA upgrades more than a week after the software first started rolling out. It’s unusual but Android 5.0 Lollipop is a massive update and Google seems content taking its time.
It’s also worth noting that the company has yet to roll out the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to the Nexus 7 LTE or the Nexus 7 HSPA+, the cellular variants of the Nexus 7. It’s not clear when Google plans to deliver these updates though an early rumor suggested that Google would get its Nexus Lollipop release out by the end of November.
Today, we want to offer some Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop tips to stragglers, those that own a Nexus device but still haven’t seen the OTA pop up on their smartphone or tablet. Keep these in mind as we trek further into the month of November and towards the end of the year.
Start Preparing Your Device for Android 5.0
Even if you consider yourself a seasoned Nexus user, you’d be wise to prepare your device ahead of the Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA. Proper preparation can help to limit issues and headaches post update and it will ensure that your transition from Android 4.4 KitKat to Android 5.0 Lollipop is as smooth as humanly possible.
There are a number of steps that you can take to prepare ahead of your missing OTA update though we’ll focus on a few of them here. First, clean up your device and ensure that you have a good amount of free space on your device. Take this wait as an opportunity to delete files that you no longer need. Android 5.0 Lollipop requires 500MB of free space to install but the real benefit is that you’ll have a nice, clean device after getting your new software on board.
You’ll also want to make sure that your files are backed up before installing the update. You can flip on Auto Backup and you’ll want to make sure that your other cloud services are set up properly before installing the software. There’s always a chance that something could go wrong during or after the upgrade and you do not want to lose precious files.
Little steps like this will go a long way and we highly recommend taking a look at our guide before the OTA arrives for your device. It’s going to benefit you in the long run.
Investigate Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop Problems
You would be wise to take a look at the Android 5.0 Lollipop problems that are plaguing Nexus devices at the moment. There are a number of them and there’s potential for them to impact your device once you get the OTA and the software on board. By investigating, you’ll not only familiarize yourself with the issues themselves but you’ll also likely run across temporary or permanent fixes provided by the Android community.
This is going to be essential to your Android 5.0 Lollipop experience because there’s really no telling how long it’s going to take Google to roll out its first Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Google typically rolls out bug fixers in the weeks after a release but for the moment, you’re going to be on your own when it comes to Android 5.0 problems.
Get acquainted with the issues, both big and small, and bookmark or jot down resources where you can find fixes. We recommend taking a look at Google’s Nexus Help Forums first. There are a ton of knowledgeable people on there that should be able to come up with some potential remedies for any issues that you may encounter down the road.
Sideload Lollipop At Your Own Risk
If you’re tired of waiting for the OTA, and we’re sure that many of you are, you can go the manual route and sideload the software using the appropriate steps and files. At this point though, most of you should probably avoid this method because it can cause serious problems on your device, problems that could ultimately force you to perform a factory reset.
Instead of side loading, we suggest researching the process right now so that next time, you can side load the software and skip Google’s lengthy OTA process. There’s no reason to risk the stability of your device this late in the game. There’s too much potential for things to go bad, especially if this is your first Google OTA.
Check for the Update Daily
Instead, we recommend checking for the update through the device’s settings twice a day. Any more than that is going to be overkill. Twice a day or so, once in the morning, once at night, is good enough. Most people are simply going to get a prompt in notifications without manually checking for the update. That’s how we got several of our Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop updates. Point is, there’s no need to mash on check for update. You won’t get it any faster that way.
Don’t Do This
For many years, the Google Framework Services “trick” was promoted by some sites as a way to force a Nexus update. While this “trick” may force the update, it’s going to do way more harm than good. Here is what Google Engineer Dan Morill had to say about the Google Framework Services “trick” a long, long time ago:
Doing this changes the primary ID by which Google knows your device. As far as the servers are concerned, the device was basically factory reset. There are many downstream effects of this, but a big one is that this invalidates the tokens used by any app that uses GCM (which is nearly all the Google apps, and a ton of third-party apps.)How apps react to GCM IDs changing varies by app. With Play Store you have to log out and log back in, I think Gmail usually handles it transparently eventually but won’t get new mail notifications for a while, etc. Some apps you may have to clear data on to recover. All apps will simply stop getting GCM push-messages, until they get a new GCM ID; some do this frequently, others rarely, and some apps use the GCM ID as an ID on their own servers (as it is opaque and basically random), so other things besides push messages may not work.Nothing bursts into flames, but it makes a ton of nuisances on the device, including some that can look pretty mysterious. Your mileage will vary depending on what apps you use.All of this can be avoided by just doing an ‘adb sideload’ if you are impatient.
Finally, just be patient. These updates have been rolling out for quite some time now and we should be nearing the end of several of these roll outs (Nexus 5, Nexus 7 Wi-Fi) and perhaps, the start of others (Nexus 7 Cellular). The last thing you want to do is jeopardize your device because you’re sick and tired of waiting around for the update. Remain patient, stay logical, and you should come out of the update process better for it.

Android 5.0 Lollipop Top Important Problems And Issues Are Solved Now
The Android 5.0 Lollipop wasn’t milk and honey and many users experienced some issues that gave them headaches. However, for almost every bug there is a solution, so if you want to get rid of your problems, read this article.
The missing system.img error
It seems that this update already comes with problems especially on the Nexus 5 devices. The users complained that when they tried to install Android 5.0, during the procedure, an error occurred – the missing system.img, which isn’t a serious problem and it’s remediable by just flashing the img files manually, one by one.
The Wi-Fi connectivity problem
The same Nexus 5 owners who were hoping to solve the old Wi-Fi connectivity issue, it seems that they’re stuck with it, because Android 5.0 Lollipop brought it back. There are some solutions for this problem and this implies switching the airplane mode on/ff, reconnecting to the network, restarting the router etc.
The battery problem
Whenever a new Android update is installed, the batteries on some devices are drained faster because the new update doesn’t install clean, but it’s applied over the current version, and probably conflicts of interests occur during the process. To avoid any unpleasant situation, before proceeding with the upgrade do a full backup of your data. Go to Settings > Backup & Reset section, or do it manually using the hardware buttons.
The video playback problem
There were reported problems with the Nexus 7 tablet, meaning that video playback bugs occurred in YouTube and other applications, but to solve the YouTube issue, you have to go to Settings > Apps > YouTube and clear the cache, then try again and in case it doesn’t work, do a reboot. If the bug persists, reinstall your applications or do a backup and perform a factory reset.
The update error message
Moving on to the Nexus 9 tablet, when the users tried to install the OTA update, something blocked the process and reverted back to the initial version. If you’re now very skilled, it’s better to just wait until Google releases a new update to fix the bug, or if you want to take a risk, flash the latest factory image.
The flashlight bug
If it’s night, dark and you can’t find your keys or an object, you’re most likely using the flashlight or the camera. But sometimes, Android doesn’t let you turn off the flashlight and the only way to solve the problem is by doing a reboot on your Nexus 5 device.
When Android 5.0 OTA breaks on modified devices
If you made some changes to your Android OS, you’ll have problems when installing the OTA update, but there’s a way to fix this: flash a stock image again.
Recent apps switcher
On some devices, if you stack more applications, the performance of the device is affected. On other devices, the users reported that after removing a card from the stack, it returned “mysteriously”. The solution? Reboot the recent applications or keep on swiping.

How To Keep Your Android Phone From Getting Lost And Stolen
Most smartphones you can buy nowadays can seriously burn a hole in your wallet. That’s one of the reasons why owners of new smartphones treat their device like a fragile baby. Of course, you also love your phone for its features and hardware.
But as it might happen with all kinds of small things, your beloved smartphone is constantly exposed to the risk of being lost or stolen. I know, shocking, but that’s the cold hard truth! You occasionally lose things and, well, thieves do what they do.
Making your phone trackable and secure is the best way to prepare yourself for such situations. Of course, it’s unlikely that you’ll lose your phone, but better be safe than sorry.
Note: If you also own an iPhone or iPad, there’s also an easy way to track it down, in case you lose it.
Steps to take so you’re able to recover your misplaced, lost or stolen Android phone
Although there are ways to track your Android phone without installed tracking apps, being prepared for the worst gives you a great advantage and a high probability of recovering your baby, mistress or whatever you call your smartphone.
1. Install an anti-theft app
That is the most obvious step here. If you want to be able to track a lost phone, install some sort of tracking app, duh! I highly recommend the anti-theft app cerberus (Play Store link). It is easy to set up and offers a wide range of features. Besides tracking your device using your browser, you can lock or wipe it, display a message on the screen, take images or videos with the front or back camera or start an alarm sound.
Another great feature is the ability to hide the cerberus app in your app drawer, so that it can’t be seen by thieves. Alternatively, you can install a disguised version of cerberus. In that case, it will appear as “System Framework” in your app drawer. Cerberus offers even more features but these are the ones you probably need most.
You can try out cerberus one week for free before having to pay $4. It’s totally worth it! Just compare it to having to buy a new phone.
In case your phone is rooted, you can even flash cerberus into your ROM. It will turn your phone in your own personal NSA fortress. Being deeply integrated in your system, cerberus is able to survive even a factory reset.
2. Install Dropbox and turn on Camera Upload
Having Dropbox’s Camera Upload option enabled can come in handy in case cerberus isn’t able to connect to your phone at all. Camera Upload basically uploads every taken picture to your Dropbox folder. Why is that useful? Because a potential thief might take interesting pictures with your phone that might help you identifying the person or the phone’s location.
3. Set up a lock screen unlock pattern or password
Having an unlock pattern or password can be quite annoying if you tend to unlock your phone a lot. However, besides keeping your data safe from other people, it also hinders thieves to check out your device and uninstalling any anti-theft apps they discover. Also, it makes it much harder for them to disconnect your phone from your Google account which is critical if you use tracking tools such as Google’s Android Device Manager. You can create an unlock pattern in your security settings.
4. Install a lock screen protection app
Being stuck on your lock screen, a thief can still do one thing without a problem: turning off your smartphone. There’s no way to track your phone if it’s turned off! Thankfully you can make it a little bit more difficult for the thief. Installing an app like Smart Lockscreen Protector will block the power menu option so that no one can turn off or mute your phone.
Although, there’s still the possibility to turn it off by pressing the power button for a long time, it might take a thief longer to figure that out. That’s more time for you to track down your phone.
5. Write down your phone’s IMEI number
Find out your phone’s IMEI number and write it down. This number can be used to clearly identify your phone. Also, if you tried everything but weren’t able to track it down, you can ask your carrier to put the phone on the GSMA IMEI blacklist. This will make your phone useless because it won’t work with most carriers anymore. And if you, miraculously, retrieve it you can always take it off the blacklist.
Being prepared is the first step to getting your phone back
Setting up your phone using the above steps doesn’t need much time at all and can save you a lot of trouble. I recommend that you follow these steps as soon as possible. After all, you could lose your phone later today.

How To Track Your Lost Android Phone Without Installed Tracking App
There are a handful of phone recovery or anti-theft apps on the Google Play Store which can be a lifesaver in case you lose your phone or, even worse, it gets stolen. But many people might only realize that there are such apps AFTER it got lost or stolen. Then, it usually is too late and you have to face the ugly truth that the phone is gone for good.
How to track your Android phone or tablet after it got lost or stolen
But don’t burst out in tears just yet. There’s still hope for your phone to find its way back to you! There are a few ways to remote control and track your phone even if you haven’t installed a recovery app before it vanished.
Let’s have a look at the various ways to get your Android smartphone back to its rightful owner!
1. Track your lost Android device with Google’s Android Device Manager
Requirements:
- Your device is connected with your Google account.
- Your device has access to the internet.
- Allowed Android Device Manager (ADM) to locate your device (turned on by default). This can changed in the Google Settings app.
- Allowed ADM to lock your device and erase its data (turned off by default).
Android Device Manager is a Google’s official and easy-to-use tool to track your Android phone or tablet. The best thing about it is that you don’t need to install an app to be able to track your devices. The only requirement is that your device is connected to your Google account, turned on and connected to the internet.
Besides tracking, letting your phone ring and wiping your phone (which has to be enabled manually), Android Device Manager doesn’t offer more options to remote control your phone. Hopefully, Google will work on that and offer more features, such as taking pictures in case it got stolen and you want to know who took it.
In case there’s no laptop around when you lose your device, you can also use someone else’s Android phone to track it. Instead of using the mobile browser, you can also use the Android Device Manager app. If you the other phone doesn’t have it, simply download it here. You can sign in using the guest mode and your Google account credentials. Now you should be able to track your lost device, let it ring or wipe its data.
Are you not able to locate your phone this way? This can happen for several reasons. The one you should hope for, is that your device is simply not connected to the internet or turned off. In that case, simply keep trying to track it until it (hopefully) connects to Google’s services again.
In case it got stolen, it’s possible that the thief has disconneced your device from your Google Account. If that happens, neither Android Device Manager nor any other tracking tool will be able to locate the device, since it’s necessary to be logged into your Google Account. This doesn’t apply to previously installed tracking apps but in this scenario there are none on the phone. However, there’s one last resort but more on that later.
2. Remote control and track your smartphone with Android Lost
UPDATE: Due to Android API updates, Android Lost can’t be activated remotely on devices running Android 3.0 or higher.
Requirements:
- Your device is connected with your Google account.
- Your device has access to the internet.
- You’re not running Android 3.0 or higher.
This is a more complicated way to track your phone. Basically, you need to install the tracking app ‘Android Lost’ on your phone and activate it by sending it an SMS (this can be done from any phone). How do you install something when you don’t have your phone with you? That’s very easy. You can install any app on all your registered devices directly from your browser through the Google Play website. Simply navigate to the Android Lost app and click the install button.
The remote installation process of Android Lost is very straightforward and only requires that your phone is still connected with your Google account. However, in case of theft, you have to hope that the thief doesn’t disconnect from your account.
So here’s what to do:
Step 1: Install Android Lost remotely
Install the Android Lost app remotely via Google Play in your browser and it will be installed on your phone remotely. As already mentioned, your phone still needs to be connected to your Google account. Otherwise, this won’t work.
Step 2: Activate Android Lost (not working on Android 3.0+)
If you are still in the possession of your smartphone or tablet then all you need to do is starting the app. But this is, obviously, probably not the case if you lost your phone. So, to register your device remotely, send an SMS with the text “androidlost register” to your phone. This SMS can be sent from any phone. This will trigger Android Lost to register itself using your Google account credentials.
If you own a tablet, SMS might not be an option. In that case, install “AndroidLost Jumpstart” before you install the actual Android Lost app. It will jump start the registration process when Android Lost is being installed.
Step 3: Log in to the Android Lost website
Visit the Android Lost website and sign in using your Google account. After doing that, you should have access to all remote control features such as the following:
- Read the latest SMS on your phone
- Force your phone to play a loud alarm with a flashing screen. Perfect if you misplaced your device.
- Get the location of your device
- Lock and unlock your phone
- Wipe your entire phone so no private data falls into the wrong hands
- Erase the SD card
- Use the camera to make pictures (front or rear camera) to get a nice shot of the nice person who took your device.
- …here’s the complete feature list
Note that it can take a while for the registration process to complete.
Android Lost is a great tool to get your phone back
I have to say that having the possibility to install and register this tool remotely makes it very powerful in case you lose your device. Unfortunately, The only negative thing I experienced is that the notification of a new app called ‘Android Lost’ could tell a potential thief about what’s going on. Unfortunately, activating Android Lost is only possible on Android Versions older than 3.0.
Here is a success story of a dad chasing down the man who stole his daughter’s phone with the help of Android Lost.
3. Plan B is the Android Lost alternative for devices running Android 2.0 – 2.3
Requirements:
- Your device is connected with your Google account.
- Your device has access to the internet.
If Android Lost is not working out for you and you’re phone is still running an older version of Android (2.0 up to 2.3) you could give Plan B from Lockout a try. Install the app directly from the Play Store (Link) to your device and, if successful, Plan B will send your device’s location to your Gmail address. It will send you a mail every 10 minutes with the current location. You can also use any other phone to send an SMS with “locate” to your phone to get the location via mail.
As already mentioned, Plan B only works with devices on Android 2.0-2.3, so it won’t work with most devices. Also, the app hasn’t been updated in a while, so I cannot guarantee that it will work.
4. Use Google Maps Location History to track your lost Android phone (even if it’s turned off)
Requirements:
- Your device is connected with your Google account.
- Your device has access to the internet.
- Location Reporting and Location History need to be activated on your device (can be done in the Google Settings app on your device).
Unlike the Android Device Manager, the Location History feature of Google Maps doesn’t focus on tracking down a lost phone. You can use your location data to for many different reasons such as looking up past travel routes or last night’s pub crawl tour. However, it is also a good way to locate your phone.
Here’s what you need to do. Go to the Google Maps Location History and make sure the current day is selected in the calendar. Click on “Show timestamps” below the calendar to see all the times your device’s location was registered. Now scroll down and select the latest timestamp to see the last available location.
Other than Android Device Manager, which also uses GPS for tracking, Location History only uses cell tower IDs and Wi-Fi location detection to collect location data. This means that the accuracy can vary significantly.
So how can this tool help you if you’re phone’s battery is empty? Well, before your phone died, Google might have saved its current location. That means that you might be able to find it using the last reported position in your location history.
The advantage of Location History is the ability to track your phone’s location frequently over a period of time. If someone stole it, you could make out often visited places, which could be the thief’s home or workplace. That might help you and the authorities to catch the person.
I recommend trying out the Android Device Manager or Android Lost first, since they’re able to use your device’s GPS and offer other useful features.
5. Use Samsung’s Find My Mobile to find your phone
Requirements:
- Your device has access to the internet.
- You need to have a Samsung account and your device registered with it.
- Find my mobile needs to be set up on your Samsung phone (enabling remote controls).
If you have a Samsung device, you might be able to find your phone using Samsung’s own tracking service ‘Find my mobile’. For this to work, you need a Samsung account and registered your device before you lost it. So try to remember if you did that.
You did? Awesome. Head over and sign in to the Find my mobile website. Check the left sidebar and make sure that your device is connected to your account. Now, all you need to do is selecting ‘Locate my device’ in the sidebar and click on the locate button. If your device is online and remote controls is enabled, you should see its approximate location. Find my mobile also allows you to do other things such as locking your device, letting it ring with a message and wiping its data.
6. How to use Dropbox to find your stolen phone (Android & iOS)
Requirements:
- Your device has access to the internet.
- Activated “Camera Upload” in your Dropbox app.
- Someone needs to take pictures with your lost device.
Dropbox can be your last resort if all other approaches don’t bring you any closer to finding your phone. For this to work, however, Dropbox needs to be installed on your phone and the “Camera Upload” feature has to be activated. This way, every time your phone’s thief takes a picture, it automatically gets uploaded to your Dropbox “Camera Uploads” folder. So, if he or she takes a nice selfie you might be able to identify the thief. And if you’re lucky, you can make out the location by looking at the background of the uploaded pictures.
Should that be impossible, simply start a blog and show the world all the pictures your thief has taken. There’s one funny tumblr page sharing images of Hafid, the guy who stole the phone of the blog’s owner.
So far, that’s the only way Dropbox can help you. Dropbox doesn’t give you the IP address of mobile devices which are connected to your Dropbox account. This is only possible for Desktop PCs and laptops until now.
I hope you are reading this just out of pure interest and not because you lost your phone! But if that’s really the case, I truly hope that this article will help you track it down. Either way, I recommend installing a good tracking app BEFORE your phone vanishes. An app I recommend is Cerberus, which is available on Google Play.
